St. Albert To Gain a Unique Urban Sports Village (Press Release)

15/01/2010 13:35

SAS Sports & Entertainment Group officially announces the development of a unique “Urban Sports Village” on a 300-acre site in the northwest quadrant of the City of St. Albert. The comprehensive and integrated real estate development is in the initial planning stages and SAS Sports & Entertainment Group will be seeking the first set of municipal approvals from the City of St. Albert shortly.

The 300-acre site is bordered by the Ray Gibbon Drive extension on the east, Giroux Road on the south and Villeneuve Road on the north. Complementing the unique “Urban Sports Village” concept on the west side is the Avenir and Melcor Development, which was recently announced by Rampart Avenir Communities Ltd.

Although there are many urban villages, the project is unique in the fact that it is one of very few urban “sports” villages yet completed anywhere on the globe. In addition to residential developments, it is comprised of a combination of sports facilities, highly specialized sports training programs and academies, public spaces, commercial developments and some light industry. The development will be green and clean with a comparatively small carbon footprint conserving energy and water, utilizing alternative energy sources and having higher residential density in order to meet new CO2 emission standards.

The sports facilities comprise of an athletic fieldhouse large enough to occupy a full-size CFL playing field, a 5-plex indoor hockey centre with 4 NHL-size ice surfaces and 1 Olympic-size ice surface, a regional baseball stadium, and outside playing surfaces for football/soccer, baseball/softball and tennis. In addition, a high-performance training centre, fitness centre, sports media centre and a school academy will complete the sports components.

The entire development will be privately funded. The sport facilities, training programs and academies will be available to residents of St. Albert, Sturgeon County and the Greater Edmonton Area. The uniqueness of the development has the potential to identify the City of St. Albert as a “Major Sports Centre” in Western Canada and attract athletes and visitors from Alberta and beyond.

SAS Sports & Entertainment Group is comprised of business/sports professionals that either live in or have lived in St. Albert and the Greater Edmonton Area. They are committed to improving quality of life and providing exceptional recreation and sports facilities and programs for youths, adults and seniors in our community.
